Hoda Golestani - Psychologist

Mr Hoda Golestani

Hoda is a registered psychologist with a Masters degree in counselling psychology from Curtin university. He has been registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for over 13 years, is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) college of counselling psychologists and the Association of Counselling Psychologists (ACP). In addition to private practice, Hoda has worked as a school psychologist and in a psychiatric hospital setting with a wide range of people with complex issues.

Hoda is a Psychology Board of Australia approved supervisor and has a passion for helping new graduates become effective therapists.

PHILOSOPHY OF PRACTICE

Hoda uses a therapeutic approach that is best described as person centred, trauma-informed and evidence based. He is well trained in psychodynamic and existential psychotherapies, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), schema therapy, eye movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based approaches.  He can use a number of these approaches that best suit you.

His intention is firstly to build a strong therapeutic relationship so as to work collaboratively with you to help you achieve your mental health and well-being goals. In doing so, he will focus on you as a whole.  Together you will figure out who you are at your core, explore your story and what you want in life. You will make sense of your existential struggles and choices, and ultimately, what gives your life meaning.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND INTERESTS

Hoda was born in the United States to Persian immigrants and moved to Australia when he was three years old. He was taught that one should grow up to live a life of service – to help others, to help the community and in doing so, help the world. This motivated him become a psychologist. In his youth he volunteered at Lifeline, worked with children and youth with disabilities and complex behavioural issues, travelled and lived in the Pacific Islands, and travelled extensively throughout Western Australia working with Indigenous people in the Pilbara and Kimberley. In 2001, He was honoured to be given the skin name ‘Jakamarra’ by the Tjurabalan Elders from the community of Billiluna in the Kimberley.

Most importantly to him, he is a husband, and father of three beautiful children. He loves music, playing and watching sport (mostly AFL and soccer) and spending time with his family.
